Dr Back graduated from the School of Optometry University NSW in 1981 and obtained his PhD in 1997 from the same University.  Dr Back held a number of positions in the School of Optometry between 1983 and 2001 at the CCLRU and the Cooperative Research Centre for Eye Research & Technology in product development and lens design programs.  He was also the architect of regional industry funded continuing education programs in contact lenses (APCLEP) and presbyopia (ICEE) delivered to over 20,000 practitoners throughout the Asia Pacific region from 1990 to 2001.

From 2002 Dr Back continued his focus on contact lens product development in California at Ocular Sciences as Director Clinical Research until its acquisition by CooperVision in 2005.  Dr Back continued at CooperVision where he held the position of Vice President of R&D for 6 years from 2007-2012.  During this time he led the development of CooperVision’s family of Proclear and silicone hydrogel products, including Proclear 1 day, Avaira, Biofinity, My Day and MiSight.    In 2013 Dr Back was appointed Chief Technology Officer at CooperVision to oversee the medium to long term research and technology strategy for the Company.

Dr Back holds over 100 patents for contact lens related technologies.
